Proposed “Trigger Law” Would Give NY Parents The Power To Fire Teachers

in today’s good news….

In 2010 a group of parents in California used a new law called “parent trigger” to try to shut down one of the worst performing schools in Compton and convert it into a charter school. How did they do it? One parent cared enough about her child’s education and felt that money should not be a barrier to education.

Parents are ready to pull the trigger and fire everybody if the standards for their children's education doesn't change.

This parent, Theresa Theus decided to take a stand, took her cause to the other parents and collected enough signatures (about 61% of the parents) and demanded change as per the law. Of course the Board of Education is fighting her  (there is no money in having educated minority children) in court and a final decision is expected in the case soon.

But the call has been heard.  Parents from coast to coast have been inspired from Compton to New York, to begin to take the education of their children into their own hands. The “parent trigger” would allow parents to fire 50% of the teachers, close the school or turn it into a charter school. Thus effectively making the teachers and schools and the board of education answer to the parent (gasp!) about the level of education their children are receiving.

Whose fault is it that minority children have only a 25% chance of graduating high school?  Some would say the fault lays with the parents, the parents say the fault lays with the teachers, the teachers say that the fault  lays with the board of education, and the board would say it’s the fault of the parents.

Now the parents have laid down the gauntlet.

Rallies and visits to state capitals are being planned en masse to state capitals, with angry parents who can’t afford private education for their children being brought in by the bus loads.  Why should their kids be trained to be worker bees while the rich learn to be captains of industry?

Equal education is not something that should be bought.  It should be the mandatory in any nation.

This move is a revolution in education reform. it will be interesting to see how it develops.

  1. NOW I CAN’T SPEAK FOR ALL SITUATIONS AND FAMILIES BUT I WILL SAY THIS, THERE ARE PARENTS WHO DO NOT DO THIER PART, THERE ARE TEACHERS WHO DO NOT DO THEIR PART AND I KNOW THE BOARD DOESN’T DO THEIR PART. BUT YOU SEE A TRIANGLE OF PEOPLE BLAIMING EACH OTHER? ALL PARTIES ARE RESPONSIBLE!! FOR A GROUP OF PARENTS TO TAKE A STAND AND TAKE ACTION THEN i APPLAUD THEM!! TRUE THEY ARE NOT LOOKING TO TEACH MINORITIES BUT DESIRE CREATES APTITUDE!! IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO LEARN MORE AND REACH HIGHER PLATEAUS? YOU WILL MAKE A WAY. EVEN IF YOU CAN’T GET THEM INTO THE SCHOOLS YOU WANT THEY CAN STILL LEARN BELIVE IT.
